18th Annual Spelling Bee at Chalmette High School

The St. Bernard Rotary Club recently held its 18th annual Adult Spelling Bee at Chalmette High School. This year, over 20 teams representing a wide-array of businesses and civic organizations, took part in this fun, fundraising activity.   The Rotary is made up of business leaders, volunteering their time to community service projects, and the annual spelling bee is part of its literacy outreach.

The school system was well represented in the event, hosting a trio of teams with school roots – two from the School Board Office and one made up of retired teachers.  The two hosts of the event, Katherine and Barry Lemoine are also part of the school system family.

Katherine Lemoine said hosting the event is always a fun evening.

“The Spelling Bee is part of the Rotary Club’s outreach literacy program,” she said. “As an educator and former elementary teacher, the work this organization does goes a long way to supporting our reading and writing programs throughout the school district.”

But she said this year’s Bee was extra special since proceeds will help support a scholarship in memory of Dr. Hugh Craft, former School Board Member and longtime Rotary Club Member.

“Dr. Craft was a champion of public education and a dear friend,” Lemoine said. “It was wonderful to see his legacy honored at an event that I know meant so much to him.”

Lemoine was also quick to credit CHS Senior Eryn Loria, this year’s mascot and helper bee for keeping the proceedings moving along.

This year’s winning team was the St. Bernard Retired Teachers represented by Denise Cooper, Denise Cooper, Cindy Puddy Kooke and Kristin Kooke Carbo.  One of the school board teams captured second place while Gulf Coast Bank placed third.

Rotarian and School Board members Sean Warner said it was a good night for a good cause.

“On behalf on the St. Bernard Rotary, thanks to all of our sponsors for participating,” “he said.

“It was a great success for us and the children of our community as the proceeds will directly benefit our literacy projects.”
