District-Wide Students of the Year Named

Three outstanding St. Bernard Parish students were recently named as district-wide Students of the Year - Jackson Nunez, Abigail Coker, and Emily Vu.

Jackson Nunez, a fifth grader at Davies, is an honor student who has scored “Advanced” on all state-wide standardized tests during his five years in elementary school. Outside of the classroom, Jackson is involved in several competitive athletic teams and extra-curricular activities.

Abigail Coker from Trist Middle School was recognized as the Middle School District-Wide Winner. Described by teachers and school administrators as a high achiever both inside and outside of the classroom, Abigail has received straight “A’s” throughout her middle school career and scored a 22 on the ACT last school year. She has a strong passion for the performing arts, participating in a wide-range of dance and theatrical productions throughout the parish.

At the high school level, 12th grader Emily Vu of Chalmette High School will represent the district at the regional competition. Emily is a product of St. Bernard Parish having attended Davies Elementary and Trist Middle School. An exceptional student, Emily currently holds a 4.16 G.P.A. and a 31 on the ACT. She has received multiple national awards for her outstanding performance in Academic Games and currently serves as the Vice President of Beta Club. Emily has held other leadership roles in both the Writing Club and the Lean In Leadership Club.

These three students competed against other school-level winners across the district as part of the competition.  They included Alexander Alford (Arabi Elementary), Alexis Closson (Meraux Elementary), Carson Chiappetta (Lacoste Elementary), Olivia Williams (Smith Elementary), Christopher Tabora (Chalmette Elementary), and Madelynn Rousell (Gauthier Elementary). At the middle school level, Alyza Alfonso represented St. Bernard Middle while Ava Volante was Andrew Jackson’s school-wide winner.

School Board President Clifford Englande said he was very impressed by all of the winners.

“All of the students who competed have accomplished so much in their time in our schools,” he said. “It was an incredibly difficult decision.”

Englande said the three district winners represent all that is good in our school district.

“Academically, athletically, and artistically gifted, these three students represent all that our school district has to offer our students.  It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to get to meet these scholars, and I wish them luck in the next phase of the competition.”
