St. Bernard Parish Public School System Update for December 15, 2022

Chalmette, LA - The community of Arabi was hit by a tornado this afternoon, making it the second tornado to impact this area in less than a year.

The St. Bernard Parish Public School System is fortunate that schools and facilities did not sustain damage during today’s weather event. However, due to loss of power, Arabi Elementary School and the Maumus Center will be closed on Thursday, December 15, 2022, and will reopen on Friday, December 16, 2022. All other public schools in St. Bernard Parish will remain open and follow a normal schedule.

St. Bernard Parish school buses will pick up middle and high school students who live in the Arabi area tomorrow and will follow their normal routes to the best extent possible. If any streets are impassable, children should go to the nearest accessible and working street. Those with issues are encouraged to call the bus garage at 504-301-3941. Buses will be rerouted as needed to ensure all students are provided with safe travel to and from school.

Superintendent Doris Voitier asked for prayers for the Arabi community.

“We will rally around our community members who have been impacted by the tornado. We have always pulled together as a family, and we will continue to do so.”
