Chalmette High School Teacher and Alum Named as 2023 Teacher of the Year Finalist

Chalmette, LA - In a live announcement at the Louisiana Department of Education’s Annual Teacher Leader Summit, Chalmette High School teacher Justin Templet was named as a statewide Teacher of the Year finalist.

Now in its tenth year, the Teacher Leader Summit is an annual professional development conference that brings together Louisiana educators to share knowledge, learn new skills, and prepare for the upcoming school year. Templet was one of nine teachers who were recognized at the summit for their ability to inspire, innovate, and impact learning.

Templet, who teaches English III and AP Language & Composition at his alma mater, said he was surprised and elated by the news. He credits his teachers and colleagues for inspiring him, sharing he has always found strength, unity, and gratitude at Chalmette High School.

“I became an educator because I was fortunate enough to have incredible teachers who consistently demonstrated not only the power that learning has on one’s life but also the power that effective and compassionate teaching has on learning,” said Templet.

In addition to his work in the classroom, Templet serves as the assistant director of the school’s drama club, the sponsor of its literary magazine, the co-sponsor for the CHS Ambassadors, a writer of English II and English III curriculum for the district, and a member of the Student of the Year selection committee.

Assistant Superintendent Mary Lumetta said Templet has always exemplified excellence, both as a student at Chalmette High School and more recently, as an educator and ambassador of the school.

“Justin was a standout student,” said Lumetta. “It has been remarkable to see him grow through the years and inspire others through his passion, persistence, and perseverance. He is truly deserving of this recognition.”

Through a partnership with Dream Teachers, the Louisiana Department of Education’s Teacher of the Year program provides an opportunity to acknowledge teachers who are making exceptional gains with students.

State winners will be announced at the 14th Annual Cecil J. Picard Educator Excellence Awards Gala on July 30 at the World War II Museum in New Orleans. Templet and all of the Teacher of the Year finalists and semi-finalists will be recognized and celebrated.
