Two St. Bernard Parish Educators Receive API Teacher Awards
Chalmette, LA - Chalmette High School’s Justin Templet and St. Bernard Middle School’s Heidi Scharfenstein were recently honored by the Delta Chapter of the American Petroleum Institute as educators who exhibit a commitment to teaching, resourcefulness, professional involvement, and community service. For their excellence in and out of the classroom, the API Teacher Award Program bestowed Templet the Chairman's Award and Scharfenstein the Distinguished Teacher Award.
Chalmette High School Principal Wayne Warner called Templet a true ambassador.
“From his time as an outstanding student to his incredible influence as a teacher here at Chalmette High, Justin represents all of the commitment and positive traits we value here. We are very fortunate to have him in our school each day,” said Warner.
Angela Seibert, Principal of St. Bernard Middle School, commended Scharfenstein for her passion in serving others.
“Heidi is the type of teacher who truly cares about students’ academic growth, and it is evident in her teaching style,” said Seibert. “Every activity, every question, and every thought her students work on always align to a goal that the kids understand and want to accomplish. This is 100% her doing. As a principal and a former English teacher, it’s a joy to see this in action. It makes my heart smile.”
Templet and Scharfenstein continue a tradition of academic excellence in their community. Over the years, St. Bernard Parish has been home to two Louisiana Teachers of the Year, four Milken Educator winners, and a bevy of state, regional, and national awards honorees.
Superintendent Doris Voitier said she is proud of this legacy of learning.
“Everything we do here is focused on helping children and strengthening our community through education and the opportunity that it creates,” said Voitier. “We are so proud and thankful for all of our teachers and staff.”
Voitier also encouraged those looking to serve to consider a career in education, acknowledging that the St. Bernard Parish Public School System is currently seeking passionate, dedicated individuals for the upcoming school year.
“From bus drivers to classroom teachers, there is a place for you here in our school family,” said Voitier.
