St. Bernard Parish Public School System Celebrates District-Wide Students of the Year
Chalmette, LA - Three outstanding St. Bernard Parish students were recently named as district-wide Students of the Year – Ramy Dali, Jackson Nunez, and Avani Miller were the respective winners of the elementary, middle, and high school divisions.
School Board member Carly Jackson, one of the judges on the panel, said she was very impressed with all of the nominees. “All the students who competed have accomplished so much in their time in our schools,” she said. “It was an incredibly difficult decision for all of our judges.”
Ms. Jackson said the three district winners represent all that is good in public education. “Academically, athletically, and artistically gifted, these three students epitomize all that our school district has to offer our students.”
Ramy Dali, a fifth-grade student from Lacoste Elementary School, is an honor roll student and a student leader. An outstanding scholar and athlete, Ramy is also involved in a host of programs that benefit the community. He co-founded Feed It Forward in partnership with a local food store – an initiative where people can prepay for a meal to benefit a person in need. Ramy also serves as the president of his school’s service organization – K-Kids.
Jackson Nunez, an eighth-grade student at Trist Middle School, was chosen as the middle school student of the year for his commitment to excellence in and out of the classroom. A gifted writer and athlete, Jackson also enjoys being on stage. He is proud to represent his school and family and looks forward to next year when he will bring his many talents to Chalmette High School.
This year’s high school winner is Avani Miller, a senior at Chalmette High School. Avani is an outstanding student-athlete, serving as the captain of the school’s basketball team and as an active member in academic organizations like Beta Club and Mu Alpha Theta. Avani is also a member of the school’s student council, 4-H Club, and Key Club and was recently named as a Posse Scholar. As such, Avani will attend Villanova next fall to major in criminology. She said she appreciates her time at Chalmette High School and is excited by what her future in Philadelphia holds. “I can’t wait to be a Wildcat at Villanova,” she said. “The university is top-notch, its athletic programs – especially basketball – are excellent, and it will be my first time seeing snow.”
Each of these three winners was also quick to credit the teachers and administrators at their schools for the support and encouragement.
Superintendent Doris Voitier said such appreciation is a testament to the unity throughout the school community.
“These three winners are amazing students, but more importantly, they are great people and leaders,” Voitier said. “We are so proud of Ramy, Jackson, and Avani and are confident that they will represent our parish well in the regional competition.”
These district winners will compete with others throughout the area in the Region 5 competition in hopes of advancing to the state level.
