Chalmette High School Senior Wins Prestigious Competition
Chalmette, LA - Chalmette High School senior Sophia Lucurto was recently awarded first place in the Donald W. Wood Sr. Vocal Competition.
The competition is open to all Louisiana high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors and is a collaboration between the New Orleans Opera Association, Loyola University New Orleans College of Music and Fine Arts, Tulane University Department of Music, and New Orleans Center for Creative Arts.
Sophia competed against student performers from across the state and when the judge’s scores were tallied, Sophia was named as the overall winner.
Annelise Cassar Tedesco said she is grateful her students have this opportunity each year to compete in this event which promotes artistic excellence, provides financial support to young vocalists, and encourages young singers in vocal music.
She also called Sophia a great ambassador to her school and community.
“She’s not only a talented vocalist,” said Cassar Tedesco. “Sophia represents all that we try to instill in our performers. She is driven and passionate, and we are incredibly proud of her.”
