Kelly Le-Bowman to Serve as District 3 Member of St. Bernard Parish School Board
Le-Bowman’s business background and commitment to public education will serve the board well
At a special meeting of the St. Bernard School Board, Mrs. Kelly Le-Bowman was appointed to serve as the interim representative for District 3. Le-Bowman, a Chalmette resident and an active community member, will fill the seat that was vacated with the passing of long-time board member, Darleen P. Asevedo.
Le-Bowman said she applied for the board as a way to help and to continue Asevedo’s legacy. “When the opportunity arose, I felt the duty to commit my time, talents, and resources to improve our school system,” she said.
In her opening comments, Le-Bowman shared her personal story of coming to the United States as a young girl and how public education influenced her.
“The value of education changed my life, and also lifted me,” she said. Her positive experience in school helped ignite her passion for school. “There is no greater life-changing resource than public education, and there is no greater advocate for public education than one who has had her life changed by it.”
The Corporate Regional Director of Sales for the Avalon Hotel Group, Le-Bowman said she will rely on her business background and commitment to public education in this new position. She referred to the school system as “the cornerstone of any community” and said her focus is on implementing policy to ensure success for all students.
Le-Bowman earned her degree in advanced mathematics-actuarial science from Louisiana State University. She said this background and her experience in financial operations analysis have served her well professionally and on the number of board positions she has held, including the Financial Board of Our Lady of Prompt Succor Church. She has also been active in a number of local organizations and foundations including the Chamber of Commerce and STARC.
Community service is an important part of her family life as well. Her husband, Beau, is a St. Bernard Justice of the Peace. Together, they have spearheaded a number of outreach programs to help those in need. For their humanitarian service to the community of St. Bernard, the Bowmans were awarded the Medal of St. Louis from the Archdiocese of New Orleans.
The couple resides in Buccaneer Villa North and are the proud parents of four children. They also have two grandchildren. Le-Bowman called her appointment to the Board a great honor. She said in addition to being the first Asian to represent Chalmette, she wants “to be able to carry on my friend Darleen's legacy. “
At the end of the special meeting, Board President Diana Dysart welcomed Mrs. Le-Bowman to the Board and thanked the other candidate, Christy Cusimano, for stepping up to serve.
“We are so happy to have had two great applicants and community leaders looking to be a part of our school family,” Dysart said. “We all will miss Mrs. Asevedo’s warmth and commitment to our children, but we know that District 3 will be well represented by Mrs. Le-Bowman. We welcome her to the Board and to our team that is focused on unity in our community.”
