St. Bernard Parish Educator Named 2023 High School Teacher of the Year
Chalmette, LA - Justin Templet, a teacher at Chalmette High School, was recently named as Louisiana's High School Teacher of the Year. This announcement was made as part of the 14th Annual Cecil J. Picard Educator Excellence Awards Gala held at the World War II Museum in New Orleans. Templet and the other state winners and finalists were recognized and celebrated.
Templet, who teaches English III and AP Language & Composition at his alma mater, said he was proud to be recognized for his work at a school that means so much to him and that his time as a student influenced his decision to teach at CHS.
“I became an educator because I was fortunate enough to have incredible teachers who consistently demonstrated not only the power that learning has on one’s life but also the power that effective and compassionate teaching has on learning,” said Templet.
In addition to his work in the classroom, Templet serves as the assistant director of the school’s drama club, the sponsor of its literary magazine, the co-sponsor for the CHS Ambassadors, a writer of English II and English III curriculum for the district, and a member of the Student of the Year selection committee.
CHS Principal Wayne Warner cited Templet's enthusiasm and compassion as two of his strengths.
"Justin's love of literature and his rapport with his students is truly wonderful,” said Warner. “We are so happy to have him here with us each day.”
School Board President Cliff Englande referred to Templet as a true ambassador to the district.
"In everything he has done, Justin has always exemplified excellence," Englande said. "It has been remarkable to see him grow through the years and inspire others through his passion, persistence, and perseverance. He is truly deserving of this recognition.”
Templet’s achievement was based on classroom observations and the growth of his students on statewide assessments. Superintendent Doris Voitier said she is proud of Justin's success and his commitment to the students in his care.
“Justin exemplifies selflessness on a daily basis and makes the needs of each student a priority,” Voitier said. “He is an exceptional teacher surrounded by a wonderful staff and leadership team who do great things with our students every day. And as our theme for this school year will center on gratitude, I want him and all of our outstanding teachers to know how thankful we are that they are a part of our school family."
Templet said he appreciates the recognition and will continue to advocate for his students.
“I am truly honored to be named as Louisiana's High School Teacher of the Year and will continue to ensure that all of my students feel safe, respected, and valued.”
