St. Bernard Parish Public School System’s “Accidental Astronauts” Takes Audiences on a Stellar Journey

Chalmette, LA — The St. Bernard Parish Public School System’s Planetarium at the Maumus Center welcomed a sold-out crowd Saturday, August 1, for two showings of Accidental Astronauts, giving local families and community members an unforgettable journey through the solar system.

Originally scheduled for one showing at 10 a.m., the event quickly approached capacity, prompting the Maumus Center to add a second showing at 11:30 a.m. Both showings sold out, filling the Planetarium with school families, community members and guests eager to experience the wonders of space.

The fun-for-all-ages program began with a guided tour of our solar system, giving audiences an up-close look at the planets and other celestial wonders surrounding Earth. Planetarium Director Alisha Capstick narrated the journey, sharing facts and insights about each planet before audiences settled in for Accidental Astronauts, a space-age adventure that brought the excitement of exploration to life on the Planetarium’s dome.

The event also brought together familiar faces from throughout the St. Bernard Parish community, including School Board President Diana Dysart, who attended with her grandchildren. Superintendent Mary Lumetta joined the audience for the second showing, enjoying the cosmic adventure alongside local families.

“It was wonderful to see our community come together to enjoy an experience that was both entertaining and educational,” said Superintendent Mary Lumetta. “The response to Accidental Astronauts was truly stellar, and we are so happy that so many families were able to experience the Planetarium together. This is just the beginning, and we look forward to bringing even more exciting programs and events to the Maumus Center and Planetarium in the future.”
