St. Bernard Parish Public School System Superintendent Doris Voitier Announces Retirement

Superintendent Doris Voitier has announced her plans to retire in June, bringing to a close an extraordinary 55-year career in the St. Bernard Parish Public School System.

A graduate of the University of New Orleans, Ms. Voitier began her career in education as a mathematics teacher at Chalmette High School. From her early days in the classroom, she would go on to serve in a wide range of roles across the district, building a deep understanding of its schools and community before being named superintendent in 2004.

Ms. Voitier’s tenure has been defined by steady leadership, deep institutional knowledge, and an unwavering commitment to public education. She is widely recognized for guiding the district through its recovery and rebuilding following Hurricane Katrina, helping to restore not only school facilities, but a sense of stability and hope for the entire community.

In recognition of her leadership during that time, Ms. Voitier was awarded the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award. She served as a member of the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education from 2016-2024, contributing to education policy at the state level.

Her decades of service have earned continued recognition at the local, state, and national levels. Most recently, she was recognized by the NSDAR François deLery Chapter with the prestigious Women in American History Award, where her achievements have been formally recorded in the DAR’s national archives among notable women in American history. She was also honored for her years of leadership at the recent 88th Annual Louisiana School Boards Association Conference.

“On behalf of the St. Bernard Parish School Board, we are deeply grateful for Ms. Voitier’s decades of service,” said School Board President Diana Dysart. “Her experience, leadership, and unwavering commitment to this district have guided our schools through both our most challenging moments and our greatest successes. Having worked with Ms. Voitier for many years, I can say her dedication to the children of this parish has never wavered. She will be truly missed.”

Ms. Voitier’s career has spanned generations of students and educators and reflects a lifetime of service alongside fellow leaders who have shared in the work of guiding the district forward.

Fellow retiree Wayne Warner, who served as Principal at Chalmette High School for over fifty years, including when Ms. Voitier was a teacher there, reflected on her enduring commitment to students and the consistency of her leadership over the years.

“It has been a privilege to spend so many years working alongside Doris,” he said. “She has always led with purpose and with students at the heart of every decision. Beyond her leadership, I’ve come to know her as a trusted colleague and a true friend, and I’m grateful for the years we’ve shared in service to this community.”
