St. Bernard Parish Public School System Kicks Off the 2026-2027 School Year Powered by Learning

Chalmette, LA – The St. Bernard Parish Public School System has officially kicked off the 2026–2027 school year with its annual Back-to-School Rally, embracing this year's theme, Powered by Learning. The event, held at the Frederick J. Sigur Civic Center, brought together more than 1,000 district employees for a morning of celebration, gratitude, and anticipation as educators and staff prepare to welcome students back to school.

The program opened on an energetic note as Superintendent Mary Lumetta literally hit the ground running for her first Back-to-School Rally as superintendent, jogging her way through the cheering crowd to the stage while carrying a sign that read "Thank You for All You Do!". The gesture set an uplifting tone centered on appreciation and teamwork. "Today is about celebrating each of you," Lumetta said. "Your dedication, compassion, and commitment are what make our schools extraordinary. Thank you for the countless ways you empower one another and our students every single day."

The district's 2026–2027 theme, Powered by Learning, celebrates the people who make learning possible. From classrooms and cafeterias to buses, offices, maintenance shops, and every department in between, the theme emphasizes that every employee plays a vital role in creating safe, welcoming schools where students can learn, grow, and succeed.

School Board Vice President Dr. Katherine Lemoine led the morning prayer before introducing the group of talented employees who proudly performed the National Anthem. School Board President Diana Dysart then welcomed attendees on behalf of the St. Bernard Parish School Board, expressing appreciation for the commitment shown by employees across the district. "Every school year begins with hope because of the people in this room," Dysart said. "Thank you for your unwavering dedication to our students, our families, and one another. Your work changes lives, and we are deeply grateful for everything you do."

In a heartfelt moment, Superintendent Lumetta recognized School Board members Diana Dysart, Dr. Katherine Lemoine, Sean Warner, Joseph Long, and Donald Campbell, who will conclude their service on the Board this year. Collectively representing more than a century of service to the families of St. Bernard Parish, the members were thanked for their steadfast leadership and lasting contributions to public education in the community.

Throughout the program, a series of inspiring videos highlighted the pride, passion, and excellence found across the district while reinforcing this year's message that empowering one another each day allows every student to thrive. The videos celebrated employees from every department and showcased how working together creates exceptional educational opportunities and safe, secure learning environments for all. Filled with connection, photos, and anticipation, the annual gathering serves as one of the few opportunities for the entire district family to come together before students return to campus.

In closing, Superintendent Lumetta encouraged employees to carry the spirit of the morning into the new school year. "Every person in this room plays an important role in shaping the future of our students," she said. "You are our A-Team, and together, we always bring our A-Game. Have a fantastic year!"
