St. Bernard Parish Middle School Athletes Take the Field at the Caesars Superdome

Middle school athletes and student performers from across St. Bernard Parish Public Schools recently had the chance to experience something unforgettable: competing and performing on the field of the Caesars Superdome, home of the New Orleans Saints.

Football teams from Andrew Jackson Middle, St. Bernard Middle, and NP Trist Middle participated in exhibition scrimmages, while student performing groups like band, cheer, dance, and twirlers brought the energy of a true game day. Although no official scores were kept, every athlete had the opportunity to take the field and represent their school in front of families and friends in attendance. St. Bernard Middle played Andrew Jackson Middle, while NP Trist Middle played Boyet Junior High. Andrew Jackson Football Coach Derek Meyers noted that the atmosphere of the Superdome gave his athletes an extra boost. “The boys were excited to be in the dome and it showed in their performance. I’m proud of the game they played.”

Sean Smith, Assistant Athletic Director and Assistant Football Coach at Chalmette High, said the day offered students much more than just the thrill of being in the Dome. “Our mission as educators is to promote development of the entire individual, academically, socially, and emotionally,” Smith said. “These opportunities are invaluable. They help bring students and parents together and provide hope and motivation to our youth in pursuit of their dreams.”

St. Bernard Parish Public Schools Director of Operations and District Athletic Director Jason Dewey said the experience will have a lasting impact on both students and their families. “For many of our kids, stepping onto the same field where the Saints play is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Dewey said. “The energy, the pride, and the memories created will last long after the game is over. We are incredibly proud of the way our students represented their schools and our parish.”

Smith also noted that the shared experience is meaningful as students prepare for high school. “All of our middle schools come together at Chalmette High,” he explained. “This kind of event helps build connections and relationships across campuses, which will only strengthen their sense of community when they unite as Owls.”
