Charter School Application Process

In compliance with R.S. 17:3982, the St. Bernard Parish School Board is making public through our website, and in printed form upon request, the guidelines for submitting a charter proposal, all forms required for submission of a charter proposal, the timelines established for accepting and reviewing charter proposals, the process that will be used to review charter proposals submitted to the board, and the name and contact information for a primary point of contact for charter proposals.

Charter School Process Schedule

  • August 26, 2024: Charter application released

  • September 9, 2024: Deadline for districts to post all required information to their websites

  • October 25, 2024: Applications due

Applicants should email all application components to Doris.Voitier@sbpsb.org.

  • January 17, 2025: Last day for St. Bernard Parish School Board to make decisions to approve or deny charter applications


Louisiana's School Choice Law

In accordance with Louisiana Public School Choice (La. Rev. Stat. Ann. 17:4035.1),  the parent or legal guardian of any student may seek to enroll his/her child in the public school of his/her choice, without regard to residence, school system geographic boundaries, or attendance zones, provided that:

  1. The public school in which the student was most recently enrolled, or would otherwise attend, received a school performance letter grade of D or F for the most recent school year, pursuant to the state’s school and district accountability system, and
  2. The school to which the student seeks to enroll received a school performance letter grade of A, B, or C, for the most recent school year, pursuant to the state’s school and district accountability system, and has sufficient capacity at the appropriate grade level.
