Degrees and Certifications:
Mr. Michael Scallan
Mr. Michael Scallan, will be your child's third grade teacher for the 2019/2020 school year. This year will provide many challenging and rewarding activities that will prepare your child for the LEAP Assessments in April, but most of all prepare him/her with the skills necessary to succeed in life! Mr. Scallan has been teaching in St. Bernard Parish for 43 years. He received his BA Degree in 1975 from the University of New Orleans. His certification was in Elementary Education for grades one through eight, and is presently highly qualified. His first year of teaching was at Borgnemouth Elementary School in Violet, Louisiana. He taught there for 22 years, mostly third grade, and then became a Title 1 Facilitator for the next 9 years at Borgnemouth Elementary, and W. Smith Elementary. His duties as a Title 1 Facilitator included working with students who were having trouble with math and reading skills, mentoring first and second year teachers, many who are still teaching in our great St. Bernard Parish School System, and in servicing teachers on the various computer programs and instructional methods. When Hurricane Katrina devastated our Parish, he was displaced like many St. Bernard residents. He lived in Bossier City for over a year, and then moved back to Slidell in 2006 to resume his teaching career in St. Bernard Parish. Starting in the 206/2007 school year, he taught third grade at Andrew Jackson Elementary for the next 6 years. Next, he had the honor of teaching at Joseph J. Davies Elementary starting in the 2011/2012 school year to present. During his career, he was chosen Teacher of the Year at Borgnemounth Elementary, Andrew Jackson Elementary, and most recently at Joseph J. Davies Elementary. His passion for learning and teaching has always motivated him to be the best that he could be as a professional educator. The methods, technology, and school policies may have changed throughout his 44 years of teaching, but one thing that has never changed is molding his students into the best that they can be. Mr. Scallan has always believed that ever child is unique and has a certain learning style that allows him/her to achieve and succeed. He also strongly believes that by working together with parents, teachers, and administrators, a difference will be made in his students' education and future! Mr. Scallan has an open door policy and welcomes students, parents, teachers, and administrators into his classroom. The best times to contact him is at Joseph J.
