Ms. Bridget Derbyshire

Bridget Derbyshire is a lifelong St. Bernard Parish resident and a product of St. Bernard Public Schools.  She is an honor graduate of Andrew Jackson High School and received a degree in Communications and certification in secondary ELA and social studies education from the University of New Orleans.  She has also been trained by the Louisiana Department of Education to teach Journey to Careers and Quest for Success.  She is entering her 25th year of teaching and 20th year in St. Bernard.  During her time at Andrew Jackson, Ms. Derbyshire has taught English/Language Arts, ELA Remediation, Social Studies, Keyboarding, and Journey to Careers/Quest for Success.  Because of her strong English background, Ms. Derbyshire believes that reading and writing are an integral part of every subject.  Her diverse teaching career has led her to do a great deal of cross-curricular activities.  Ms. Derbyshire is the coordinator of the AJ website and Facebook page and unofficial school photographer. She was chosen as Andrew Jackson's Teacher of the Year for the 2020-21 school year, which she considers the biggest honor of her teaching career.

In 2001, Ms. Derbyshire auditioned for and appeared on the television game show Jeopardy, one of her all-time favorite TV shows.  She won second place and a trip to Scotland, which has led to a love for all things Scottish.  She hopes to explore more of Europe once the pandemic is over.

Ms. Derbyshire learned to read at the age of three and has been an avid reader ever since.  She is also a huge New Orleans Saints fanatic and is well known on the AJ campus for her black and gold classroom.  Her father is an original Saints season ticket holder, and Ms. Derbyshire has been a season ticket holder herself for nearly 30 years.  She is still waiting for the team to show up to her classroom one day.  She also loves Joe Burrow and went viral just before Super Bowl LVI when she wrote an open letter to Cincinnati Bengals fans that was shared over 14,000 times on Facebook. When she's not reading or watching football, Ms. Derbyshire enjoys scrapbooking, shopping, doing crossword puzzles, having fun with her family and friends, and spoiling her goddaughter and great niece.  She resides in Meraux with her family.
