Coach Millicent (Millie) Soroe

Coach Millie Soroe teaches Swim P.E. at Chalmette High School, focusing on technique and speed with her swimmers.  She also teaches 2nd Grade "Learn to Swim" classes daily at the CHS Natatorium.   Coach Soroe is the Head Swim Coach for the Chalmette High School Swim Team, and also Chalmette High's first swim coach!

Soroe learned the skills she needed to become an effective swimmer, a lifeguard, a coach, and a Water Safety Instructor Trainer through the American Red Cross, volunteering and working for the American Red Cross for over 40 years.  Coach Soroe returned to the parish to continue what St. Bernard Parish Schools began ten years prior to the storm, teaching every public school 2nd grader how to swim, and conditioning high school swimmers.

Millie Soroe attended Andrew Jackson High School in Chalmette, and then got her Education degree from LSU in Baton Rouge.  She began her career in St. Bernard Parish as a Physical Education teacher and volleyball coach at her high school alma mater.  She and fellow coach, the late Kathy Trosclair, watched their AJ teams win two Louisiana State Volleyball Championships in the 70's.  She transferred to Lacoste Elementary, where she was once named St. Bernard Parish Elementary Teacher of the Year.  Coach Soroe has now taught 16 years at CHS, with a total of 49 years in her beloved St. Bernard Parish.

Having two grown daughters and a granddaughter and grandson, her family takes beach vacations (she loves Destin), or goes to the Caribbean Islands to snorkel.   Coach Soroe believes she has the best career she could ever imagine, combining her love of water and her desire to teach students to love the water, too!
