Carl Gaines, Jr. is a New Orleans native who has lived in St. Bernard Parish since 1969. For over a decade, he has resided in District 10 on South Creek Lane in Violet with his wife, Susette Dixon Gaines. He is the proud father of twin daughters, Spring and Sian, who attended St. Bernard Public Schools (J.F. Gauthier and Arabi Park/Chalmette Middle) and graduated with honors from Chalmette High in 2003. Carl is also a Chalmette High Graduate (Class of 1971) with a BA in History (1976) and MA in History Teaching (1993) from the University of New Orleans.

As a veteran classroom teacher and administrator, Carl retired in 2013 from the finest school district in Louisiana, St. Bernard Parish Public Schools. During his tenure with St. Bernard Public Schools, Carl taught Computer Literacy and Computer Science at St. Bernard High from 1988 to 1996.  By 1996, Carl became District Technology Coordinator for the school system and helped bring many technological innovations to our district schools, including classroom computers and the Internet. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, he was one of the first teachers to return in November, 2005  when St. Bernard Unified School was open. Susette joined Carl in January of 2006 to teach at SBUS as well.

Since retirement from Chalmette High and St. Bernard Middle respectively, Carl and Susette enjoy travel, community activities with the Kiwanis Club, and the company of their first- born grandson, Jasper!
