Andrew Jackson Middle School

Letter from the Principal

  • Colonel Family,

I hope this finds you and your family well.  As the school year approaches, questions, logistics, concerns and plans for this school year continue to change.   Last week, we uploaded and shared important updates including our District Guide to Reopening.   Today, I will share more information regarding the beginning of the school.

     School Calendar

St. Bernard Parish Public School System will delay the start of the 2020-2021 school year for students in grade K-12. The school year will now have a staggered start beginning August 11-14 to ensure safety protocols are well established and employees are trained and prepared for the  learning model in place at that time.

The day students will attend the week of August 11 will be determined by the student’s last name.

Tuesday, August 11 | Students with last names beginning with A-D

Wednesday, August 12 | Students with last names beginning with E-K

Thursday, August 13 | Students with last names beginning with L-Q

Friday, August 14 | Students with last names beginning with R-Z

Monday, August 17 | All students report to school

We are currently not amending the school calendar, and school holidays will remain the same. If changes need to be made throughout the year, we will keep you informed.

Please note, the district is in close contact with the Office of Public Health. Changes to the starting date for students may occur upon further guidance. Please continue to check our website and social media account for the latest information.

Back-to-School Day and Supply Drop Off

As outlined in the Guide to Reopening published last week, there will be no large gatherings, including Back-to-School Day. We will be having a school supply drop off on August 1st.  Guardians will be able to drop off supplies through a “drive thru” from 8:00 - 10:00.  All items must be in a bag with the students name and grade level clearly marked.

    SBPSB Virtual Option

Registration for the Virtual Option for the first nine weeks for students in grades K-8 and for the first semester for students in high school is now open. Students who were already enrolled in St. Bernard Parish Public Schools can complete the registration process and find more information about this option by visiting  Registration for this option will close at 4:00 P.M. on July 27, 2020.

A recording of the Informational Session offered last Monday along with a Question and Answer document has also been posted on the school board website.

    Face Coverings

All adults and students must wear face coverings all day and in all areas of the school, including classrooms.   Face shields may be worn in addition to face coverings but do not take the place of face coverings.  However, individuals with certain medical conditions and/or disabilities, as documented by a doctor’s note, may be excused from wearing a face covering and instead may be required to wear a shield.

Face coverings can be of any color or pattern but cannot contain writing or symbols which may be perceived as vulgar, profane, satanic, gang-related, violent, political, or tobacco, drug or alcohol-related. In accordance with our dress code, bandanas may not be worn as a face covering. The principal will make the final decision as to whether a face covering is acceptable.

    Student Fees Policy

St. Bernard Parish Public School System understands that the current health crisis has negatively impacted the livelihoods of many of our families. In an attempt to ease some of the burden our families may be facing, St. Bernard Parish Public School System has suspended the instructional fees for the 2020-2021 school year.

You can find the latest information regarding school openings on our website or by visiting Important information is currently posted on our website and Facebook and more information will be added.

The transportation department is finalizing bus routes and times and they will be posting them to our websites within the coming days. However, transportation times are subject to change as they respond to the number of students utilizing this service.  In accordance with the guidelines, school bus capacity is limited based upon the phase in which the state is operating. For this reason, the St. Bernard Parish Public School System is urging families to consider transporting students to and from school in personal or family vehicles.
