Letter from Trist Administrators

  • July 27, 2020

    Dear Trist Pirate Families,

I hope this message finds you and your family well and safe. The faculty and staff of Trist Middle School misses our students and looks forward to welcoming them back soon! Recently, the St. Bernard Parish Public School District released a district-wide plan for the 2020-2021 School Year. This plan detailed the physical, environmental, and wellness standards that our entire school district will be operating under this upcoming year.

As outlined in this document, the current plan is for Trist Middle School to begin the 2020-2021 school year under the Traditional Learning model with our school open daily to students while following recommended safety guidelines for class sizes, social distancing, and movement. Students will return to Trist following a staggered schedule to provide our staff the opportunity to work with smaller groups of students in order to prepare them for the upcoming year during these unprecedented times.

As mentioned above, August 11-14 will be a series of staggered first days of school for students:

Tuesday, August 11 - Students with last names beginning with A-D

Wednesday, August 12 - Students with last names beginning with E-K

Thursday, August 13 - Students with last names beginning with L-Q

Friday, August 14 - Students with last names beginning with R-Z

Monday, August 17 - ALL Trist students report to school

To prepare for the beginning of the school year, you can find important information such as safety precautions,, dresscode, and attendance policies by visiting www.sbpsb.org/StrongStart2020.

Further information regarding school specific procedures and policies for Trist, including the our School Supply List, can be found on our school website at http://trist.sbps.org.  While following the staggered schedule from August 11-14, we ask our Trist students to bring only the school supply items listed as HOMEROOM SUPPLIES.  Teachers will inform their students of the dates to bring remaining supplies from our list.

Our administrators and teachers are working diligently to…

Create safe & effective arrival, departure & school meal procedures,

Reconfigure our building to house no more than 24 students per classroom,

Train our staff on CDC suggested health procedures such as social distancing, mask use, hand washing and sanitizing

Re-design our curriculum to ensure that students continue to learn at high levels while striving to keep our students and staff healthy.

Over the next days and weeks, parents can expect to receive more information from our school through our Trist Middle School website under the Strong Start link.  As information is finalized, this website link will be a “one stop shop” where you should go for guidance on many school-specific issues such as our daily schedule, dress code, car and bus rider information, breakfast/lunch plans, and much more!  Please note that Trist will not be mailing home our traditional summer packet to our families due to time constraints and the fact that information changes quickly.

In past years, Trist Middle School has hosted our traditional Back-to-School Day.  Given the current guidelines and restrictions, we will soon post videos introducing our faculty & staff and a virtual tour of our building and of our procedures on our school website through the Strong Start link.  These videos will help ease your and your child’s anxiety and, hopefully, answer more of your questions.

Please remain calm and rest assured that our administrators and staff are currently working around the clock to prepare for a beginning of the school year that prioritizes students’ and staff’ wellness while also providing a rich educational experience.

Thank you for your continued patience, support and trust as we navigate this ever-changing and very fluid situation.
